MANILA - Vice President Leni Robredo said Tuesday she was willing to meet President Rodrigo Duterte for dinner, dismissing a warning that it could be a trap.
The meeting will come as the country's two highest officials prepared to answer separate impeachment complaints in Congress.
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, a Duterte critic, had warned the Vice President that the invitation could be a ploy to "politically neutralize" her. The President's supporters have blamed Robredo for the impeachment move.
(He's the President, extending his hand... The assumption, always, is good intentions, right? It will be bad if I don't meet his offer halfway.)
Robredo acknowledged that her supporters' misgivings over a possible meeting with Duterte were not unfounded
Pero sa tingin ko kasi, at the end of the day, inihalal kami pareho," Robredo said.
(I believe the fears have basis because many things happened before this. I am aware of the concerns of many. But I think that at the end of the day, we were both elected.)
(We were both given mandates to serve the country and it is our obligation to find common ground even if we don't agree on some issues.)
Robredo said Duterte extended the dinner invitation during the Philippine National Police Academy graduation last Friday, where they made a rare public appearance together.
Robredo resigned from the Cabinet last December due to policy differences with the President.
(No matter how hard, we will explore all avenues to find peace in our country.)
