MANILA – The Liberal Party (LP) on Monday castigated Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III for “focusing” on the impeachment threat against Vice President Leni Robredo.
In a statement, the erstwhile ruling party said there are much more important issues that the Senate leader must focus on, instead of the possible impeachment case against the vice-president.
“We urge Senate President Koko Pimentel to focus on the numbers that matter: the thousands of unresolved murders, the rising prices of basic goods, and the 13-million-hectare undersea region rich in minerals and biodiversity of Benham Rise,” the LP said.
“These are the numbers that we should all be focusing on, not the 100 votes of congressmen on the impeachment case threatened by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Solicitor General Jose Calida on Vice President Robredo.”
The LP also lamented that “instead of the life and death issues that confront our people every day like putting food on the table and our children’s safety, security, and future, politics is dominating the national discourse.”
“Let us, the country’s elected national leaders, all return the focus on what the people sent us to the Senate to do: to improve their and their children’s lives,” the political party added.
Alvarez earlier linked Robredo to the impeachment complaint filed by the Magdalo party-list group against President Rodrigo Duterte. The vice-president has denied this accusation.
The House Speaker then threatened to lead an impeachment case against Robredo for supposedly tarnishing the country’s reputation when she sent a video message to a side event at the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs meeting (CND) last week, which raised concerns about the political climate and peace and order situation in the country amid the government’s war on drugs.
The LP, however, said Robredo’s video message was “within her prerogative as an elective official and citizen of the country.”
“The video message showed the world that the Philippines enjoys democracy where dissent is respected,” it added.
In a newspaper interview over the weekend, Pimentel was quoted as saying that possible impeachment bid against Robredo has more chances of prospering compared to the one against Duterte, considering that the president commands the support of the majority in the lower house.
Under the Constitution, an impeachment complaint must originate at the lower chamber. After finding an impeachment complaint sufficient in form and substance and if one-third of the House vote to impeach, the complaint is then transmitted to the Senate, which will act as the impeachment court.
