MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday lashed out at the United States and the European Union for their "hypocrisy" when it comes to the issue on death penalty.
The Duterte government has been warned of various economic repercussions from the U.S. and EU if the Philippines reimposes the death penalty.
The president, however, was unfazed by threats from the E.U., which grants the Philippines trade perks on the condition that the Philippines respect human rights. The revival of the death penalty is seen to affect the grant of these perks.
“Palibhasa itong E.U., they have this historical guilt. Sila ang nag-conquer ng other lands. Noon during their heydays okay sa kanila to kill. They have refined their generation, their society, tayong naiwan they are imposing it on us,” he said.
Duterte also slammed the U.S. for supposedly projecting itself as the “exponent of human rights” despite imposing the death penalty itself.
Reviving the death penalty is one of the legislative priorities of Duterte.
The House of Representatives recently approved the bill.
