MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday heads to Myanmar for an official visit in a bid to bolster trade and investment between the two countries.
In his pre-departure speech in Davao, the President said his visit will underscore the Philippines' commitment to Myanmar to deepen the ties between the two countries.
"We also have a common interest in sustaining inclusive growth and the development of our peoples," Duterte said.
The President explained that bilateral ties and investment will be the key areas of discussion during his visit.
He added that the Philippines can encourage collaboration with Myanmar in industries such as pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage.
"In my discussions I will convey the Philippines' support with the reforms undertaken by Myanmar as well as its efforts to address certain problems of this region," Duterte said.
Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex Chua previously said that the Philippines looks forward to signing an agreement on food security with Myanmar during Duterte's visit.
“One important agreement may be signed between our governments namely, the Memorandum of Understanding on Food Security and Agricultural Cooperation,” Chua said.
Duterte is scheduled to meet with Myanmar President U Htin, State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and Commander-in-Chief Sr. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing Kyaw to discuss ties and regional concerns.
"In my discussions I will convey the Philippines' support with the reforms undertaken by Myanmar as well as its efforts to address certain problems of this region," Duterte said.
Filipinos in Myanmar are also scheduled to meet the President at 7 pm on Sunday.
Duterte's visit coincides with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Philippines-Myanmar bilateral relations.
From Myanmar, Duterte will fly to Thailand for an official visit until March 22.
He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha of Thailand, but not the new king, Maha Vajiralongkorn.
