Utterly irresponsible, says Robredo camp
MANILA- House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez said he is thinking about filing an impeachment complaint against Vice President Leni Robredo for possible betrayal of public trust.
Speaking to ANC on Friday, Alvarez said he is still studying the complaint on the basis of Robredo's video message to the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs, where she criticized the government's war on drugs.
"We think that the statement of Speaker Alvarez is utterly irresponsible. He himself mentioned that he is still looking on the matter and he will still have to consult his legal team. And if that is the case, he is making such public statements without sufficient basis and it's purely speculation," Georgina Hernandez, spokesperson of Robredo told ANC.
Hernandez said nothing in Robredo's video message showed betrayal of public trust, and that Alvarez's statements are just "empty threats."
"We really think that such statements should not be taken seriously and these are really just empty threats in trying to mind condition the public," she said.
President Duterte's allies in the House of Representatives have a "supermajority," and only one-third of its 292 members would be needed to impeach the Vice President.
Hernandez also addressed allegations that Robredo's message was released a day before the filing of an impeachment complaint against President Rodrigo Duterte.
She said they received the request for the video message early last month and submitted within the same month as well.
"The decision as to when it will be posted and shared online depended solely on the schedule of the conference which was beyond our control," she said.
"There is no such coordination as to the filing of the impeachment case and the releasing of the video," she added.
